Years 5 and 6 offer a dynamic and engaging learning environment that prepares students for the challenges of high school and beyond.
In Years 5 and 6, students continue to build on their knowledge and develop their critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills. Our curriculum is designed to be challenging, yet enriching, and offers an array of opportunities for students to explore new subjects, develop their interests, and further their understanding of the world.
In Years 5 and 6 of the Victorian Curriculum, students develop advanced critical thinking, communication, and collaboration skills. English refines reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills, while Mathematics builds advanced problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Science encourages scientific knowledge, and Humanities and Social Sciences shape student understanding of the world around them. Health and Physical Education develop strategies for promoting wellbeing, leadership, and responsible behaviour.
Our thrilling snow camp offers a unique opportunity to explore the wonders of winter sports and build strong friendships, while promoting resilience and independence for our sebior students.
Our Year 5/6 students enjoy participating in our Options Program. This program provides our senior students with opportunities to explore their interests and talents in a supportive and dynamic environment.
The Winter/Summer Lightning Premiership sports program fosters teamwork, sportsmanship, and a healthy lifestyle, as students engage in friendly competition and represent our school with pride.
This program pairs each Year 6 student with a younger buddy, typically from the Foundation year, creating a nurturing and supportive environment for our newest members. Year 6 students serve as role models, offering guidance, friendship, and encouragement to their younger peers.
As they approach the end of their primary school journey, our Year 6 students celebrate their achievements and personal growth during a memorable graduation ceremony, marking the beginning of a new chapter in their educational adventure.
My teacher is special because my teacher helps me correct words and helps me learn new stuff like division and mostly maths and writing and I’m so glad to have a teacher. A teacher that has helped everyone at this school.

I love art because it has feeling, it’s not just putting a pencil on paper or a paint brush running along a canvas. It makes you feel happy or calm. In Art we explore tone, shade, texture and shape. In Art you have to show lots of the Characteristics of an Effective Learner, you need to try your best and persevere when things don’t turn out perfectly.
- Willow, Yr5
I like doing music because you get to learn about how to read music and you learn about the beats of music and I enjoy learning the dances for the production and I really enjoyed listening to a podcast called Song Explosion where a popular artist talks about a song they wrote. dreamed of.
- Lila, Yr5
Sorrento Primary School is special to me because I’ve been at this school since Prep. The school is so welcoming and it takes into account if you’re below or above average. The thing that is really special about this school is the wonderful teachers and students. I’ve made so many friends here and I’m sure you will too.
- Joe, Yr6
Beach day is an extremely fun event for 5/6s. There are six fun rotations, my three favourites were going on the boat, kayaking and snorkelling. When you go out on the boat you go and see the seals, they stink a lot but they are cute to watch. Beach Day also is great exercise and by the end of the day you’re exhausted. Beach Day is one of my favourite events of the year, Mr Lewis tries really hard to make it fun for everyone.
- Olivia, Yr5
I love the school concert, because I get to enjoy the production while I’m performing in it! It is one of the only times (except Grandparents Day) where I get to sing and dance with my friends and family. I am so grateful for how much work Mrs Baldwin puts into it, and it all pays off for how much fun it is. Every year I get to dress up and perform, but I am always a bit nervous, but then I see my friends and it becomes so much fun!
- Lachlan, Yr5
I love playing and listening to music because it is so creative and there is something out there that everyone will love listening to. I’ve been doing instrumental lessons for nearly six years and I am so grateful for this wonderful opportunity. There is such a wide range of instruments that you can learn to play which are taught by knowledgeable and friendly teachers. I love being able to play my violin in front of a crowd and I enjoy every second of it.
- Emily, Yr6
I love Science because of all the experiments and robots. My favourite experiment would be the crystals or elephant’s toothpaste, and my favourite robot would be the bee bots.v
- Thomas, Yr 5
This week we did this [experiment] with a small lightbulb. With one battery the light was very dim, barely lighting it up. With two the light was substantially brighter than it was before and with four, well I’d like to say it was much brighter than before but sadly it wasn’t, but I still enjoyed figuring out how to add more power to the light. Overall, I love Science and I’m sure I still will for years to come.
